Which Linear Models This Applies To

What matters more than the model number is where the bracket meets the gate leaf. Linear swing operators bolt to two points, the post bracket and the gate bracket, and the gate bracket takes the brunt of every open-close cycle. When we see a failed bracket, we photograph the serial number plate on the motor, measure the bracket’s bolt-hole spacing with calipers, and record both before cutting anything.

On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: we use genuine Linear mounting kits when the gate post and leaf are in good shape and the factory geometry still applies. When a previous install was never squared up or the gate’s been welded once before, we fabricate from 1/4-inch plate steel instead. The aftermarket equivalent for a Linear gate bracket isn’t a knockoff, it’s a properly gusseted steel plate cut and drilled to fit the specific operator arm. Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags noticeably at the hinge side. This usually means the post bracket or the hinge plate itself has begun tearing away from the post steel. The weld isn’t necessarily broken; it’s being slowly peeled by cycles that were never in tolerance.
• The operator arm makes a hard clunk at the end of travel. Loose or cracked bracket bolts allow the arm to move a quarter inch before the motor does. That play sounds like a clunk and wears out the arm bushing within weeks.
• You see fresh rust dust on the bracket or the gate frame. This is the first visible evidence of a crack propagating through a weld. The rust dust appears before the crack opens wide enough to see.
• The gate closes fine in winter but drags in summer. Texas heat expands steel, and a bracket that was marginal in January becomes a bind point in August. We regularly re-weld brackets that were installed without sufficient clearance by previous companies.
• The opener motor runs but the gate doesn’t move. The most common cause on Linear swings is a sheared gate bracket bolt or a weld that’s cracked completely through, allowing the arm to swing free while the motor turns the release mechanism.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check for obvious play in the bracket by pulling on the gate leaf and watching whether the bracket moves independently of the post. You can photograph the serial plate, measure the gate’s sag at the latch side, and note whether the problem is worse in heat or cold. What you should not do is attempt to weld a cracked bracket with a 110V flux-core welder while the operator is still attached. The spring tension in a Linear swing arm is modest, but the arm is under power whenever the motor is connected, and a slipped pin or energized lead during a weld is a serious injury risk. We’ve repaired more than one DIY bracket where the weld looked solid from the outside and was cold-lapped to nothing underneath.

There’s also the alignment problem: a bracket that’s welded 1/8 inch out of square changes the arm geometry and overloads the motor. That 1/8 inch is what our welders measure and correct before striking an arc.
