BFT Welding & Fabrication: The Mansfield Owner’s Guide
We stock and install BFT-compatible welding and fabrication components for Mansfield gates, with most repairs running between $225 and $650 installed depending on the part, the weld location, and whether the post or bracket has to be cut out and reworked. Most jobs are completed same-day when we have the component on the truck, which we usually do for the common BFT swing and slide arms. The typical owner discovers this problem one of two ways: the gate starts dragging or binding on one corner and gets progressively louder, or a hinge or mounting bracket shears and the gate sags visibly by an inch or more. In Mansfield’s clay soil, posts shift with wet-dry cycles, and a BFT motor will keep pushing against a gate that no longer swings true. That’s when brackets crack and welds start to work loose.
We’re an independent service provider and not affiliated with BFT, which means we match the part to the model and the failure rather than steering you toward a motor replacement you may not need.
Which BFT Models This Applies To
BFT has put different weld-relevant hardware on different lines over the years, and the part that fails on one series doesn’t always fit another. The Deimos and Phobos swing arms use a pinned steel bracket at the motor and a greased thrust bushing at the leaf, and we’ve seen the bracket ears crack on Deimos units in Mansfield when the gate post shifts even a quarter inch. The Rigel and Sub swing operators mount to a steel base plate, and on older installations the plate was welded to a post that has since rusted at the weld line. Slide-gate installations, including BFT’s Ares and Sirmo racks, fail most often at the rack bolts and the end stops, where a single broken tooth on the rack or a snapped stop plate leaves the gate to travel too far and slam the frame.
Identifying your part takes two measurements before you call: the center-to-center distance on the arm mounting holes (usually 180mm or 210mm on BFT swing operators) and the visible stamping on the bracket or hinge casting. If the stamp is worn, we photograph and measure on site. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for BFT swing brackets, we prefer the BFT original or a US-machined equivalent – the imported copy brackets sometimes run a millimeter oversized on the pin bore, and that play becomes a wobble at the leaf edge within six months. For simpler parts like stop plates and rack bolts, a quality aftermarket component is perfectly fine and costs less.
Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- Gate sags at the free end. The hinge post has moved or a weld has cracked at the bottom hinge, and the BFT motor is now lifting the gate’s weight rather than swinging it. You’ll hear the motor strain on every open cycle. This is the leading cause of burnt-out capacitors in Mansfield BFT operators.
- Grinding or clicking from the arm bracket. The bracket bolt holes have oblonged, or the pin has developed play. The noise travels through the arm and sounds worse than it is, but the fix is the same: re-drill or replace the bracket before the arm itself wears the pin hole larger.
- Gate stops short of the close limit. A cracked stop plate or a slipped rack bolt gives the gate too much travel or too little. If the BFT control board is set for a 12-foot travel and the gate now closes to 11 feet, check the rack before touching the limits.
- Rust staining at a weld joint. Water has entered the crack and is working the joint loose from the inside. The gate still operates, but the crack is telegraphing. In Mansfield’s periods of heavy dew and rain, a stained weld line means the joint is compromised even if it still holds weight.
- Motor housing is warm to the touch. When the gate binds at a worn hinge or a cracked bracket, the motor runs too long on each cycle and the capacitor overheats. The motor feels warm not because it’s failing, but because it’s compensating for steel that is.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For Mansfield BFT gate owners, our welding and fabrication work falls into three price bands. A simple bracket replacement with factory or machined parts runs $225 to $350, including the bracket, hardware, and on-site fitting. Weld repair at an existing post or hinge, with re-aligning and straightening, runs $300 to $500 depending on the weld length and whether we need to remove the gate leaf to work safely. A post replacement with new fabrication and welding, which includes setting a new post in concrete and re-hanging the gate, runs $500 to $650 in most Mansfield yards.
Every price is written and handed to you before we strike an arc or unbolt anything. No hourly meter running while we talk, no line items that appear at the end. What drives the range is access – a gate that’s flush against a brick column takes longer to work on than a freestanding post we can reach from both sides. We photograph what we found before the work, what the joint looked like when we finished, and leave you a written record of the part number installed. That’s Haven Standard Clause 4, and it costs you nothing extra.
DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do on your own: check the hinge bolts for looseness with a wrench, photograph the bracket and stamping so you can identify the part, and note whether the gate sags more when wet than when dry. What we’d stop you from doing: cutting out a cracked hinge and attempting a vertical-up weld with a 110-volt flux-core machine. A gate leaf weighs hundreds of pounds and stores real energy when it’s swinging. If a weld fails mid-cycle or a cut post shifts, the gate becomes a falling object. We’ve re-welded more than a few home repairs in Mansfield where the bead held for a weekend and failed the first time the wind kicked up.
If the problem is a loose bolt or a nut that’s backed off, tighten it and re-check in a month. If it’s a cracked weld, a sheared bracket, or a shifted post, call (682) 564-0512 and we’ll bring the right steel, the right rod, and the right measurements to the first visit.
FAQs
An original BFT bracket in Mansfield lasts 5 to 8 years before hairline cracks appear, less if the post shifts or the gate leaf is oversized for the motor. The weld itself rarely fails when done correctly – what fails is the surrounding parent metal, which rusts thinner each year at the bottom hinge.
Sometimes, but the honest answer is that a bracket with a through-crack at the bolt hole is not worth re-welding. The repaired section is now harder and more brittle than the surrounding steel, and it cracks again alongside the weld. If the crack is superficial and hasn’t reached a bolt bore, we can grind, weld, and dress it – and we’ll tell you which one you have before we start.
Most bracket and weld repairs are done in a single three-hour visit. If we’re setting a new post in concrete, the concrete needs a day to cure before we hang the gate on it, so that job becomes a two-visit repair. We’ll tell you which one you’re getting before we drive out, and the price is the same regardless.
Yes – we keep BFT swing arm brackets, rack bolts, stop plates, hinge pins, and bushing hardware stocked in our service vehicles, along with equivalents for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If your BFT model uses a part we don’t carry, we can typically have it in hand the next business day. Call (682) 564-0512 and we’ll match the part to your model before you spend a dollar.
